Objectives
Stadiums and arenas are packed with fans, ready to spend money—usually in cash—on merchandise, snacks, and souvenirs while cheering on their team. Recognising the Toronto Blue Jays Stadium as a prime opportunity, XTM Canada saw a chance to enhance the fan experience with a solution that would change how money is spent at the venue.
XTM Canada partnered with Azimut to introduce cash-to-card kiosks powered by Azimut’s hardware-agnostic Experience Development Software Kit (EDK), allowing fans to quickly convert their cash into open-loop prepaid cards. This seamless software solution made transactions at stadium outlets faster and more efficient.
Key objectives included:
- Make it easy for fans to convert cash into a prepaid card for use at the stadium
- Leverage Azimut’s React-based SDK for seamless kiosk integration and user experience
- Speed up the transaction process and reduce long lines
- Allow fans to use their cards at various stadium outlets for added convenience
Challenges
Before implementing the cash-to-card solution, stadium visitors faced several hurdles:
- Long transaction times, especially during high influx times like game days
- Cash-only customers lacked an easy way to access digital payment methods
- Managing cash handling, including security and tracking
Solution
XTM Canada partnered with Azimut to enhance the fan experience at the Toronto Blue Jays Stadium with a seamless cash-to-card kiosk, also known as a reverse ATM. The system included:
- Azimut Cash-to-Card Kiosks: Self-service machines where customers can insert cash and register for a prepaid card.
- Cash-to-Card Software: Powered by Azimut’s EDK software, the kiosks enabled smooth cash-to-card conversion with a user-friendly UI, ensuring a seamless experience.
- Minimal Customer Information: The system only asks for the cash amount, minimising KYC requirements.
- PIN Generation: The API binds the QR code behind the card to the amount inserted, generating a 4-digit PIN for each card.
Overview
- The customer approaches the kiosk and initiates the process
- The kiosk prompts the customer to enter the amount to be converted into a prepaid Mastercard card (minimum CAD 100)
- The kiosk contains cards with QR codes printed on the back
- Once the customer inserts the amount, the QR code behind the card is scanned, triggering an API request
- The API generates a 4-digit PIN for the card
- The kiosk issues the card and prints a receipt which includes the PIN
Results
Implementing reverse ATM kiosks at the Toronto Blue Jays Stadium has been a success. Key results include:
- Fast cash-to-card conversion process with minimal waiting time
- More customers were able to use digital payment methods, leading to increased spending at stadium shops
- The self-service kiosks enabled cash automation, reducing the need for manual cash handling
Conclusion
Azimut's SDK enables the development of intelligent, React-based apps that seamlessly integrate with various hardware peripherals, powering solutions like XTM Canada's cash-to-card kiosks and offering a modern self-service experience.
